Tate & Lyle has formally opened the expanded capacity at its oat ingredients manufacturing facility in Kimstad, Sweden.

The expansion, which is part of the $100 million investment in additional capacity for Speciality Food Ingredients announced in May 2014, means that capacity at the facility has increased more than tenfold since it was acquired by Tate & Lyle in 2013.

At the facility, Tate & Lyle uses what it says is a unique patented manufacturing process, without the addition of chemicals, to transform locally sourced Swedish oats into high value ingredients such as PromOat Beta Glucan and PrOatein Oat Protein which are used in a wide variety of food and beverages including breakfast cereals, smoothies, baked goods, bars and sports shakes. The facility also produces Avenacare Oat Beta Glucan for use in the personal care and cosmetics industries.

The Kimstad facility has obtained an AA-grade BRC Global Standard for Food Safety Certification.

“We continue to see growing demand for oat ingredients across the world as consumers look for healthier and tastier foods,” said Joan Braca, President, Speciality Food Ingredients, Tate & Lyle. “Through the expansion of our facility in Sweden, and our deep formulation expertise, we will be able to help our customers develop more products with health-benefit claims and functional benefits.”

“PromOat Beta Glucan is a source of beta glucan – the soluble dietary fibre in oat bran that provides important functional and health benefits,” said Caroline Sanders, Sales Director, Oat Nutrition, Tate & Lyle. “The use of PromOat can give access to a number of health claims, such as lowering blood cholesterol and lessening the risk of coronary heart disease. Enriching foods and beverages with this natural, heart-healthy oat fibre means we can offer new growth opportunities to our customers. Oat protein is rich in certain essential amino acids that are important for muscle growth and recovery. And what’s more, our PrOatein ingredient tastes good, making it ideal to meet the fast-growing consumer demand for nutritious, protein-enriched foods – including vegan foods.”
